Just 10 Minutes a Day Can Make All the Difference

Did you know that reading with your child for just 10 minutes a day can make a huge difference to their learning and development? It doesn't have to be complicated — it just has to be enjoyable!

Why reading together matters

According to Oxford University Press, as little as ten minutes of reading together each day can have a significant impact on a child's achievement. Reading aloud to your child isn't just about the story. It helps them to:

  • Learn new words and understand language
  • Listen, concentrate and remember things
  • Put ideas in order and make sense of the world
  • Connect the words they hear with the words they see on the page

And the good news is — you don't even need a book! Telling your child a simple story you know from memory is just as valuable. The most important thing is that you both enjoy it.

Start as early as you can

The NHS recommends starting to share books with your baby from a very early age. Even before they can talk, babies love hearing your voice and listening to the sounds and rhythms of language. Simple picture books are perfect for little ones.

The NHS also highlights that sharing books helps you bond with your baby and is great for their emotional wellbeing — as well as their learning.

Make it part of your day

Find a quiet moment, turn off the TV, and snuggle up together. Even 10 minutes at bedtime can make a real difference over time.

Your local library is a brilliant free resource — they usually have a great range of children's books and many run story sessions for young children too.
