Movement, Positions & Play: Our Staff Training Day

Dear parents and carers, on Monday 2nd Oct -  staff from St Edmund's Nursery and Lilycroft Nursery School came together for a training day on how young children develop their movement skills. The session, Movement, Positions & Play, was led by Hafsah Khan, a paediatric physiotherapist from Thrive Together Therapies.

We explored how children aged 0 to 5 build gross motor skills such as rolling, crawling, walking, climbing, jumping and balancing. These big movements lay the foundations for confidence, concentration and later skills like holding a pencil.

Key things we learned:

  • Every child develops at their own pace.
  • Time on the floor in different positions, like tummy time, kneeling and squatting, builds strength.
  • Play is the best way for children to learn to move.
  • A strong core helps with fine motor skills such as drawing and using cutlery.

Following Monday's training, you'll see us adding more floor play, obstacle courses, climbing and balancing games to your child's day. You can help at home too, with tummy time for babies, walks instead of the buggy, and trips to the park.

If you have any questions about your child's movement, please speak to their key person.

A big thank you to Hafsah Khan and Thrive Together Therapies for a practical and inspiring day.
